Premium air purifiers UK: room size, filters and running costs
A handsome machine still has to move enough air, remain quiet enough to use and accept a filter you can afford to replace.
Buy an air purifier for a measured room and a defined problem, not for the largest number on the box.
Start with room coverage
Measure floor area and ceiling height. Compare the manufacturer's test room and clean-air delivery rate where one is published. Coverage claims based on one air change per hour are not equivalent to figures based on four or five.
Place the purifier where air can circulate around its intake and outlet. A large machine in a blocked corner may be less useful than a correctly sized unit in the room where people spend time.
Read the filter arrangement
HEPA describes a filter performance standard, not the performance of the entire room. Check how the machine seals the filter, which particle sizes are tested and whether gas or odour filtration is separate. A formaldehyde sensor or catalytic stage is a specific feature, not proof that every pollutant is removed.
Dyson says the HEPA and carbon filters in its Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde are designed to last up to five years under stated use. That is a manufacturer estimate; heavy use and local conditions can change the practical interval. Price the exact replacement for the exact model.
Add the running cost
Estimate electricity from the rated wattage and daily hours, then add filters over the planned ownership period. App features and sensors are useful only if they change how you run the machine. Night mode matters when noise would otherwise stop you using it.
Health claims need restraint
A purifier can reduce certain airborne particles in suitable conditions. It does not replace ventilation, source control, cleaning or professional advice for a health condition. Look for specific test methods rather than broad wellness promises.
Before you order
- Room volume and realistic air-change target.
- Noise at the speed you will actually use.
- Filter model, price and stated replacement interval.
- Clearance, cable route and display brightness.
- Returns if noise or size does not suit the room.
